Abstract: Modern Western party research originated in the practice of parliamentary democracy. Presupposing that a party represents a particular part of society and that parties compete with one another, it defines the party in essence as a part, and thus cannot adequately account for the Communist Party of China (CPC) or for China’s political practice. Running parallel to this lineage is a thread of thought long excluded from Western party studies. Beginning with the original thesis of Marx and Engels that the communists represent no special interest, it unfolds around the holistic nature of the proletarian party and constitutes an important starting point for party theory. The concept of the holistic party emerges from the mutual generation of this thread and the practice of the CPC. It defines the Party as a party form that generates wholeness on three levels: state building, organizational mobilization, and historical undertaking. This concept reopens the inquiry into the essence of the party, establishes wholeness as an independent category, and reorganizes the order of indigenous concepts, thereby possessing the scholarly foundation to become a signature concept in the study of Chinese party politics.
