Abstract: It has been more than forty years since the study of the history of Western political thought in China resumed with the reestablishment of political science as a discipline. During this period, a large number of high-quality specialized research achievements have emerged in China, and the content has shifted from a simple introduction of Western knowledge to an autonomous innovation of knowledge systems grounded in disciplinary self-awareness. In response to the important epochal issues in disciplinary development, Professor Ren Jiantao’s new work, The Promises of Bricolage: 40 Lectures on the History of Modern Political Ideas, outlines a picture of the development of modern Western political ideas from multiple perspectives, levels, and aspects, and puts forward the proposition of “the promises of bricolage”, which has undoubtedly provided us with very important intellectual inspiration. How should we capture the basic characteristics of the history of modern political ideas? How can we innovate the research paradigm of the history of modern political thought? To this end, we organized a thematic forum and invited six scholars—Ren Jiantao, Bao Gangsheng, Liu Xunlian, Peng Bin, Guo Taihui, and Tan Ankui—to engage in a dialogue. It is hoped that this dialogue will further promote innovation in the research topics and paradigms of the history of Western political thought.
